The role of grandparent carers

Welcome!

Being a grandparent carer is an important role that can bring a lot of joy, but it’s also hard work and challenging at times.

In this short module (about 15 minutes to read and watch videos) other grandparent carers, and practitioners who support them, share their experiences and what they’ve found helpful.

At the end you'll find a summary of key messages and the activities or ‘things to think about’ that you can save or print. On the final screen there are links to recommended services and websites for more information, resources and support.

Key messages

  • You’re not alone. Many grandparents across Australia are the primary carers of their grandchildren.

  • Grandparent carers draw on their strengths and years of experience to support their grandchildren through the ups and downs of life. Reflecting on what is most important to you about the relationship you have with your grandchild, and what you’re doing well, can remind you how important your role is.

  • When a child and/or their family is navigating difficulties, it’s normal for them to need some extra nurturing and connection with people who care about them. There are many things grandparent carers do to help children get back on track emotionally and socially.

  • Taking care of yourself is important too. By looking after your own physical and mental health, you’re also supporting your grandchild’s mental health and wellbeing.
