The role of young carers
Welcome!
Young carers have an important role that can bring a lot of joy, but it’s also hard work and challenging at times.
In this short module (about 15 minutes to read and watch videos) other young carers, and practitioners who support them, share their experiences and what they’ve found helpful. At the end of this module there is a summary of key messages and activities or ‘things to think about’ that you can save or print. On the final screen there are links to recommended services and websites for more information, resources and support.
Key messages
In Australia, one in 20 young people are providing unpaid care to a family member or friend.1
As a young carer, you draw on your strengths and resilience to support your loved ones through the ups and downs of life. Taking time to reflect on what feels important to you as a person, and in your relationship with your family, can help you notice what’s going well.
Taking care of yourself is important too. By looking after your own physical and mental health, you will be better able to care for your loved one.
Everyone needs support sometimes. It’s important to find out what support is available to you and be willing to ask for help.
